8th March, 2020.
Dear President,
REPORT OF THE BSDCQ GRANT FUNDING Future Directions: Ensuring the health of the Belgian Shepherd Dog in Queensland
I would like to thank the BSDCQ Management Committee for the opportunity provided for me to undertake the Future Directions project during 2019/2020. The project was due for completion by the 1st March, 2020, and this has been achieved.
The activities undertaken for the project have included: 1. Conducting a breed health survey. 2. Analysing all data provided through the survey. 3. Writing a full report of the findings. 4. Holding a facilitated workshop to prioritise the health concerns in the BSD based upon the outcome of the breed survey.
This has laid the foundations for further activities that the BSDCQ might consider, such as:
1. To develop a Breed Health Strategy with specific breed health plans (including evidence; support; education; testing/screening; desired health outcomes; evaluation).
2. To disseminate the project outcomes to BSDCQ members, Australian breeders and breed clubs, and anyone else who has the interests of the breed at heart;
3. To consider the implementation of any other recommendations made.
If these further activities are completed this can lead to achieving the long-term outcome of the project, which was to control and/or eradicate diseases which threaten the future health of the BSD in Queensland/Australia.
The following documents (provided to you by email) comprise the full report for the BSDCQ Grant Funding:
1. FUTURE DIRECTIONS BSD HEALTH SURVEY 2019.
- Attachment 1 - The BELGIAN SHEPHERD DOG HEALTH SURVEY 2019 OUTCOMES
- Attachment 2 - THE AVA-ANKC AUSTRALIAN CANINE EYE SCHEME: SNAPSHOT OF BSD EYE ASSESSMENTS COMPLETED
- Attachment 3 – OFA DENTITION DATABASE
- GISID RESEARCH PAPER AND SCORING TOOL
2. FUTURE DIRECTIONS HEALTH FORUM (February 2nd, 2020)
- PPT presentation
- BSD Health Forum: Summary of identified health concerns
Unfortunately, although the forum was video recorded, the sound quality was very poor, and we do not thus have a record of the discussions that took place.
Overall the project has been a very satisfying activity to undertake. It was marred by non-constructive criticism at times, but overall I felt very well supported, in particular by the BSDCQ Treasurer, Kathryn Winton, who did so in numerous ways.
Many thanks again,
Kind regards,
Kathy Prentice.
