Looking for a puppy

Looking for a Belgian Shepherd puppy?

Before committing yourself to what will be a long term responsibility, it is important to ask yourself and honestly answer some questions such as these.
  • Will a dog fit in with my lifestyle and commitments?
  • Will I always have time to give on a daily basis for exercise, care and grooming?
  • Have I made adequate provision for living quarters and secure premises?
  • Am I prepared to give the extra time a puppy needs for feeding, house-training, lead-training, socialising and teaching basic good manners?
  • Can I afford the cost of brining up a puppy and owning a dog; to pay for equipment, veterinary expenses, council registration or professional grooming?
  • Do I have time to teach the children how to properly care for a puppy and have I made them fully away that is new "pet" will be a long-term commitment, not a short-term toy?
  • If the children lose interest or my circumstances change, will I be able to continue giving all the care and attention required?
  • When I am away or on holidays, will the needs of the puppy still be met?
  • Will my canine companion be accepted and treated as a member of my family for the rest of his life?
  • Do I really want a dog?
(From the Dogs Qld "Looking for a puppy" brochure)

And Belgian specific -
  • Am I prepared for a dog to follow me everywhere including to the bathroom, as that what loyal sheepdogs do?
  • Am I prepared for a heavy coat drop and extra grooming at seasonal coat shedding times?
  • Is this dog going to be smarter and quicker and outmaneuver me or am I prepared to swat up on my dog training and handling skills to keep the upper edge in this relationship?

  • Hip Scores
  • Elbow Scores
  • ACES Eye Certificate
  • DNA full breed profile
  • Pups proof of parentage DNA report (Dogs Qld ruling for full register pups)
The long term policy of the BSDCQ is to recommend responsible breeding of fully health tested dogs - that is hip scored, elbow scored, eye tested and results submitted to the club's Health Register for publication.

ORCHID is the Officially Registered Canine Health Information Database for the ANKC. The ANKC is committed to improving the health of all pedigreed dogs. The purpose of the ORCHIS web site is to allow on-line recording of health information by health professionals and to make statistical information derived from that data publicly available.

BSDCQ's commitment to encouraging excellent health of all well bred ANKC Belgian Shepherd puppies.

The BSDCQ is serious about the future health of the breed, and is involved with fund raising for health research projects for Epilepsy, Exercise Induced Collapse, PPSC Star Cataracts, Stomach Cancer and Addison's Disease. These are not major problems within our breed, and with careful screening of breeding stock, these problems can be wisely bred away from.

The 2019 Health Survey and 2020 Health Forum show the level of dedication of the BSDCQ towards maintaining, monitoring and improving health of the Belgian Shepherd Dog.

The excellent health of the breed today is a testament to the dedicated breeders of pure bred Belgian Shepherds in the past, and our current custodian breeders that comply with the club's recommended breeding policies are to be commended and applauded.
